IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome
IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. It doesn’t have any preference regarding who it affects. People of all ages, races and cultures can and do suffer daily from IBS. Individuals with IBS experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, urgency and changes in their stool such as hard, loose or even watery and passing mucus. There is no known cause for this chronic condition. However there are possible triggers such as stress, specific foods, gastrointestinal infection, antibiotic use, over-consumption of fiber and alcohol abuse. IBS is an individual condition and not every affected person will experience the same symptoms or have their symptoms exacerbated by the same triggers.
How is IBS diagnosed? A diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is made using several methods. First of all an individual will be experiencing some or all of the typical IBS symptoms. A doctor will order blood tests and carry out a physical examination. Further exploration is usually done via a colonoscopy which allows the doctor to take a better look at the colon. Another medical exam that may be performed is called a barium enema x-ray or a gastrointestinal series which provides a close look at the large.
